Do you have an llms.txt file?

Most dentists do not. All of our clients do.

Go to your site and check: yourwebsite.com/llms.txt

This is a simple file that communicates to large language models about your website structure. What pages matter. How your practice is organized. What an AI should understand when it crawls or summarizes you.

If you do not have it, you can easily create it.

That is one of the first AEO moves for ranking your dental practice in ChatGPT. Not a 40-page SEO rewrite. A clear signal file at a public URL.

Story: Relax and Smile Dental Care

Dr. Laura Cabrera at Relax and Smile Dental Care came from another marketing company. She was frustrated. She had spent over six months trying to increase new patient numbers and did not feel heard. The vision and the needs of the practice were not getting through.

When the strategy matched the practice, the results changed. She called it their best month ever: 104 new patients, and collections improved at least 25%.

The lesson for ChatGPT and AEO is the same lesson for any marketing that works. Your practice has to be clear about what it is, what it wants, and how patients find you. Vague, generic positioning is hard for people to act on. It is also hard for answer engines to recommend.

An llms.txt file is part of that clarity for ChatGPT and other LLMs. So is the rest of the checklist below.

What AEO means for a dental practice

AEO (answer engine optimization) is how you show up when someone asks ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, or similar tools for a dentist in their area or for a specific procedure.

Dental SEO still matters. Maps, Google Business Profile, citations, reviews, clean NAP. If you have a competent team, a lot of those basics are likely already in motion. I would not outsource those just to check a box.

ChatGPT ranking adds a layer: make your site readable to LLMs, then give them answer-shaped content for the services you want to win.

A practical ChatGPT ranking checklist

1. Put llms.txt on your site

Create https://yourwebsite.com/llms.txt.

Keep it plain text. Describe the practice, key service pages, locations, and how the site is structured. Point to the pages you care about most (emergency, implants, family, whatever your lane is).

Most practices skip this. Ours do not.

2. Keep Google Business Profile and Maps tight

Primary category for the lane you want to win. Real secondaries. Service areas from patient zips. Hours, photos, reviews, NAP match. ChatGPT still leans on the same local truth Google already uses.

3. Align the website with the lane you want to own

Pick the lane you want to own. Service pages, titles, and internal links should match what you want AI to recommend you for. Generic “we do everything” sites are harder for answer engines to pick.

4. Develop FAQs on each service page

This is one of the items on the list, not the only item.

Very few dentists put a real FAQ block on every service page. It is not easy. Do not outsource inventing the questions to a marketing team that does not hear your patients.

You know what people ask locally. Questions differ by market, practice, and procedure. Come up with unique questions. Your marketing team can help publish them. The uniqueness has to come from you.

Think like the plumber examples online. People are not only asking “plumber near me.” They ask why a certain caulk is better when the intent is fixing a toilet. Dentistry is the same depth: same-day emergency rules, implant vs bridge for your situation, sedation options, local insurance realities. Write those Q and As on the page.

5. Clean citations once and keep reviews moving

Same name, address, phone on the right sites. Recent reviews with HIPAA-safe replies. Answer engines and Maps both notice stale or messy local data.

6. Measure the searches that matter

Search Console and call tracking beat vanity rankings. If you want ChatGPT and AI Overviews for emergency (or implants, or Invisalign), watch those queries and the pages that support them.

How we run this without a crazy SEO retainer

Our SEO / AEO agent is trained on 600+ dental practices. It writes weekly blog content, posts to Google Business Profile, and responds to reviews in 24-48 hours in HIPAA-safe language. It pulls Search Console queries so content matches what people actually search. Built to help you show up in Google, Maps, AI Overviews, and ChatGPT.

Full-service plans at DentalMarketing.com include SEO and paid ads together, plus that agent, so AEO stays maintained after the first setup (including llms.txt and the service-page work around it).
